Traxcess® 14: Standard 0.014 in Neurovascular Guidewire for General Intracranial Navigation
Автор: Modern Medical Solutions Editorial Team

The Traxcess® 14 from MicroVention Terumo is the standard 0.014 in neurovascular microguidewire for all-purpose intracranial navigation and device delivery, compatible with the complete Headway and VIA microcatheter families, with a 200 cm working length, platinum-alloy radiopaque tip, and hydrophilic-coated shaft.
What Is Traxcess® 14?
The Traxcess® 14 is a 0.014 in outer-diameter neurovascular microguidewire from MicroVention Terumo for standard intracranial microcatheter navigation. It is the primary guidewire for advancing Headway DUO, 17, 21, and 27 microcatheters and VIA microcatheters through the cervical and intracranial vasculature to target aneurysms, AVMs, and occlusive lesions. 200 cm working length, platinum-tungsten alloy distal tip for fluoroscopic radiopacity, hydrophilic polymer coating along the distal working segment for low-friction vessel navigation, and a stainless-steel core wire tapering to provide tip compliance.
The Traxcess 14 is torqueable across its full length, allowing hub rotation to redirect the shaped tip at vessel bifurcations. The tip is shapeable by standard steam or manual technique to J-curves, 45° angles, or gentle curves appropriate to the target anatomy.
Traxcess® 14 vs. ASAHI CHIKAI 14
Both Traxcess 14 and ASAHI CHIKAI 14 are 0.014 in neurovascular wires available through Modern Medical Solutions. The CHIKAI is characterised by its ultra-soft distal tip and SLIP-COAT hydrophilic coating, making it the preferred wire for the most tortuous distal intracranial access and spasm-prone vessels. The Traxcess 14 is the standard workhorse wire for routine aneurysm coiling, stent delivery, flow diverter navigation, and stroke thrombectomy cases with straightforward access. Most neurointerventional programs stock both: Traxcess 14 as the default and CHIKAI as the specialty wire for difficult anatomy.
Against Stryker Synchro 14 and Medtronic Transend, the Traxcess 14’s hydrophilic coating provides lower friction in tortuous segments, and the platinum-alloy tip offers superior fluoroscopic visibility compared to stainless-steel tip wires. Its tight integration with the MicroVention Terumo device ecosystem — validated for use with every Headway and VIA microcatheter — is a practical advantage for programs standardised on MicroVention Terumo.
Clinical Applications
The Traxcess 14 is appropriate for virtually every standard intracranial neurointerventional procedure: aneurysm coiling (Headway 17), stent-assisted coiling (LVIS EVO via Headway 21), flow diverter delivery (FRED X via Headway 21/27), WEB delivery (VIA microcatheters), PHIL delivery (Headway DUO), ADAPT thrombectomy (initial navigation before wire removal for aspiration). In cases where Traxcess 14 cannot navigate to target, upgrade to Traxcess Select for selective vessel entry or ASAHI CHIKAI for ultra-distal navigation.
Shape the tip with a gentle J-curve (3–5 mm radius) as the default for most coiling and stent cases — the J prevents inadvertent entry into small perforating vessels. For acute-angle vessel origins, a 45° or 90° shape allows the wire to direct into target as the assembly is rotated.
Technique Tips
Do not reshape the wire repeatedly — multiple reshaping cycles fatigue the tip coil and increase fracture risk. If the initial shape is not navigating to target, remove the wire, inspect the tip, and reshape with a fresh bend if needed rather than bending over an already-bent section.
After device delivery is complete, remove the wire before deploying any detachable device such as a coil or stent. Never pull a deployed stent through a microcatheter with the wire in place.
