ASAHI SION® black is the highest tip-load member of the SION frontline family, delivering approximately 0.8 gf — 14% more than the standard SION at 0.7 gf and 60% more than SION Blue at 0.5 gf. It retains the same ACT ONE (Asahi Composite Technology ONE) shaft construction as its siblings — tapered stainless-steel core, coil-wound tip, 1:1 torque transmission — but replaces the hydrophilic PTFE coating with a polymer + hydrophilic tip system that adds column support and reduces shaft slack during rotation. In practice, SION black fills the role of the 'second wire' when the standard SION tracks freely but encounters a lesion segment with moderate resistance it cannot penetrate. The extra tip force is enough to engage calcified plaque or fibrous tissue without escalating to a dedicated CTO wire. It is particularly useful in moderately calcified lesions, ostial RCA disease with fibrous caps, and in any anatomy where an initial soft wire has confirmed a true lumen path but cannot advance. SION black is available in three tip shapes — straight, J, and pre-shape — across 190 cm standard and 300 cm exchange lengths, with a 12 cm coil-wound segment and a 40 cm polymer + hydrophilic coating.
