Astato® XS: High Tip-Load Peripheral CTO Guidewire in 20 gf and 40 gf Variants
By Modern Medical Solutions Editorial Team

Asahi’s Astato XS pairs a tapered, uncoated ball tip with two tip-load variations — 20 gf and 40 gf — so peripheral CTO operators can escalate penetration force without changing wire platform.
Tapered-Tip Penetration for Peripheral CTO
Astato® XS is Asahi Intecc’s high tip-load guidewire for peripheral chronic total occlusions. Its tapered tip — 0.008 in at the tip on the XS 20 and 0.009 in on the XS 40, on a 0.014 in body — concentrates push force onto a very small contact area, providing the penetration needed to engage dense, calcified occlusion caps that deflect standard-profile wires.
The official positioning is direct: the tapered tip provides excellent penetration. The ball tip is left uncoated, preserving tactile feedback at the exact point where the operator needs to feel cap engagement, while hydrophilic coating along the working segment maintains movement through the occlusion body.
Two Tip Loads, One Escalation Platform
The family is offered in two variations expressly for the wire escalation technique. Astato XS 20 delivers 20 gf of tip load in 180 cm and 300 cm lengths with a 17 cm radiopaque segment; Astato XS 40 delivers 40 gf in 200 cm and 300 cm lengths with a 20 cm radiopaque segment and 60 cm of coating.
Escalating from 20 gf to 40 gf within the same platform keeps tip behaviour, taper geometry and handling consistent while doubling penetration force — the operator changes force, not technique.
Catalog Configurations
Four catalog configurations cover the family: PAGH143092 (XS 20, 180 cm), PAGH143392 (XS 20, 300 cm), PAGHW143094 (XS 40, 200 cm) and PAGHW143394 (XS 40, 300 cm), all straight-tip.
