ASAHI CHIKAI® X 010: Ultra-Fine 0.010 in Neurovascular Microguidewire for Distal Intracranial Navigation

The ASAHI CHIKAI® X 010 is a 0.010 in outer-diameter neurovascular microguidewire engineered for safe navigation in M2, M3, and other distal intracranial vessels too small or too spasm-prone for a standard 0.014 in wire, retaining the full SLIP-COAT hydrophilic coating and shapeable soft tip of the CHIKAI platform at a diameter 30% finer.

What Is the ASAHI CHIKAI® X 010?

The ASAHI CHIKAI® X 010 is the ultra-fine variant of Asahi Intecc’s CHIKAI neurovascular guidewire family, manufactured at 0.010 in (0.26 mm) outer diameter rather than the standard 0.014 in. This diameter reduction was motivated by a specific clinical limitation: in distal second- and third-order intracranial arteries — MCA M2 and M3, ACA A2 and A3, PCA P2, PICA — a 0.014 in wire can occupy a disproportionate fraction of the vessel lumen, generating wall contact forces high enough to cause vasospasm, dissection, or perforation. The CHIKAI X 010 reduces this risk by navigating within the same vessel segment with substantially lower wall contact force.

The wire retains the SLIP-COAT polymer hydrophilic coating applied along the distal working segment of all CHIKAI family members, providing low-friction vessel navigation in the same class as the standard CHIKAI. The soft platinum-alloy distal tip is shapeable, allowing operators to configure the customary J-curve or angled tip required for selective vessel entry. Compatibility with Headway DUO and other ultra-low-profile microcatheters makes the X 010 a natural choice for distal AVM feeder catheterization and small aneurysm treatment.

Technical Specifications and Comparison to CHIKAI 14

The CHIKAI X 010 features a 0.010 in (0.26 mm) outer diameter, 200 cm working length, SLIP-COAT hydrophilic coating along the distal segment, and a soft shapeable platinum coil tip. Its shaft is a tapered stainless-steel core wire providing column support despite the reduced diameter. Compared to the standard CHIKAI 14 (0.014 in), the X 010 is approximately 30% finer, which translates to a smaller footprint in the vessel lumen and a lower tip contact force in tight or spastic distal vessels.

The X 010 is compatible with ultra-low-profile microcatheters whose inner diameter accepts 0.010 in wires. It is not compatible with standard Headway 17, 21, or 27 microcatheters, which are sized for 0.014 in wires and provide inadequate inner-diameter support for the finer X 010. Operators building a distal embolization program should confirm microcatheter compatibility before incorporating the X 010 into their inventory.

Clinical Applications

The primary application of the CHIKAI X 010 is distal intracranial navigation for AVM embolization targeting feeders arising from M2, M3, A2, or similar small-calibre vessels where the standard CHIKAI 14 creates unacceptable wall contact risk. In these vessels, the reduced profile of the X 010 allows safer advancement and positioning without the spasm or perforation risk that has historically made distal feeder access technically hazardous.

Additional applications include coiling of very small distal aneurysms accessible only through vessels that would be at risk of injury with 0.014 in wires, and selective catheterization of small feeding pedicles in DAVF embolization where the pedicle diameter is in the 0.8–1.5 mm range. In all these applications, the X 010 provides the guidewire support needed for microcatheter tracking while minimizing mechanical impact on the target vessel.

Technique Tips

Shape the X 010 tip with a minimal J-curve (2–3 mm radius) using a steam shaper or gentle manual bend — the fine wire is more susceptible to kinking during shaping than heavier-gauge wires, so use a single gentle curve rather than a sharp angle. Advance the wire under continuous high-magnification road-map fluoroscopy, never against resistance.

Do not use standard torque devices calibrated for 0.014 in wires with the X 010, as the clamping force can deform or kink the finer wire body. Use a 0.010 in compatible torque device or advance and rotate by hand at the hub using very light fingertip pressure. Remove and inspect the wire tip before any reshaping; repeated reshaping fatigues the tip coil rapidly.

Ordering Through Modern Medical Solutions

Modern Medical Solutions is the authorised Asahi Intecc distributor for Tajikistan and Afghanistan. The CHIKAI X 010 is available on request for centres performing distal AVM embolization and small-vessel intracranial procedures. Contact Modern Medical Solutions with procedure-specific requirements to confirm availability.

The team can advise on compatible ultra-low-profile microcatheters for use with the X 010 and on building a comprehensive distal-access neurointerventional instrument set covering both standard and ultra-fine wire diameters.
