Traxcess® Docking: In-Situ Wire Extension System for Microcatheter Exchange Without Losing Wire Position
By Modern Medical Solutions Editorial Team

The Traxcess® Docking from MicroVention Terumo is a 0.014 in neurovascular guidewire with an integrated docking connector that accepts an extension segment, enabling microcatheter exchange to exchange-length without removing the distal intracranial wire, preserving vessel access during stent-then-coil sequences, Y-stenting, and multi-pedicle AVM embolization.
What Is Traxcess® Docking?
The Traxcess® Docking is a 0.014 in neurovascular guidewire from MicroVention Terumo with an integrated docking connector at the proximal end that accepts an extension segment, effectively converting a standard working-length wire to exchange length (300+ cm) while the distal tip remains in its intracranial position. This in-situ extension capability enables safe microcatheter exchange without the distal wire tip losing its established intracranial position — a critical capability for procedures requiring sequential device exchanges.
The conventional approach (loading an exchange-length wire from the start) works when exchange is anticipated but adds procedural complexity for every case. The Traxcess Docking allows operators to start with a standard working-length wire and convert to exchange length only when needed, reducing unnecessary complexity while providing the capability on demand.
Clinical Applications
Stent-then-coil sequences: after LVIS EVO deployment via Headway 21, the operator needs to exchange to Headway 17 for coiling. Traxcess Docking allows this exchange without losing intracranial wire position. Y-stenting: two sequential stent microcatheter deployments through the same access route benefit from maintained wire access in the first stented branch during exchange for the second stent. Multi-pedicle AVM embolization: preserves access to a previously catheterized pedicle during microcatheter exchange for the next target.
In posterior circulation flow diversion cases where Headway 27 must be exchanged for Headway 17 after FRED X deployment to complete adjunct coil embolization, Traxcess Docking avoids re-navigating the entire vertebrobasilar route.
Technique Tips
Before beginning the exchange, confirm the Traxcess Docking tip is in a stable distal position in a straight vessel segment. Attach the extension segment while the working microcatheter is still in place, verifying the connection is secure. Withdraw the first microcatheter slowly over the extended wire, monitoring wire position fluoroscopically throughout.
Load the replacement microcatheter over the extension segment and advance to the working position using the previously established road-map. Remove the extension segment only after the replacement microcatheter is confirmed in position and a new standard wire is loaded if needed for subsequent steps.
Traxcess® Docking vs. Manual Extension Techniques
Manual wire extension using a torque device or wire connector requires the operator to handle both wires simultaneously and creates a junction that may snag against the microcatheter hub during withdrawal. The Traxcess Docking’s integrated connector provides a faster, more reliable connection with less risk of disconnection during catheter manipulation — a clinically meaningful advantage in time-sensitive cases like acute stroke thrombectomy requiring emergency catheter exchange.
For programs performing complex elective neurointerventional procedures regularly, the Traxcess Docking eliminates the need to routinely pre-load exchange-length wires, streamlining the standard setup without sacrificing exchange capability for cases that need it.
