Traxcess® Select: Steerable 0.014 in Neurovascular Wire for Superselective Intracranial Vessel Access
By Modern Medical Solutions Editorial Team

The Traxcess® Select from MicroVention Terumo is a steerable 0.014 in neurovascular guidewire with enhanced tip-shape retention for superselective access to acutely angled vessel origins and bifurcations, compatible with the complete Headway 17/21/27 microcatheter family.
What Is Traxcess® Select?
The Traxcess® Select is a steerable 0.014 in neurovascular microguidewire from MicroVention Terumo with improved tip-shape retention over the standard Traxcess 14. The distal platinum coil retains its pre-shaped angle more precisely during navigation, reducing the tendency for the tip to lose its configured angle during torque transmission. When the operator rotates the wire at the hub, the shaped tip responds reliably to the rotational input at the target bifurcation, enabling controlled direction into target vessels with acute-angle origins — a scenario where standard tip wires frequently lose their shape and misdirect.
Specifications match the standard Traxcess 14: 0.014 in OD, 200 cm working length, platinum-alloy radiopaque tip, hydrophilic shaft coating, compatible with all Headway 17/21/27 and VIA microcatheters.
When to Use Traxcess® Select vs. Traxcess 14
Use Traxcess 14 for routine intracranial navigation cases with straightforward bifurcation access. Upgrade to Traxcess Select when the target anatomy requires precise superselective entry that standard wire shapes cannot achieve reliably: acutely angled ophthalmic artery origins from the ICA, PICA access from the V4 vertebral artery, posterior communicating artery access for basilar tip approach, selective AVM feeder catheterization from acute-angle branch origins, and MCA M2 branch selection in high-bifurcation MCA anatomy.
The Select’s enhanced tip retention provides its advantage specifically at the moment of bifurcation entry — once the microcatheter is engaged in the target vessel, there is no difference in tracking or pushability compared to the standard Traxcess 14.
Technique Tips
Shape the Traxcess Select tip to the specific angle that matches the target vessel origin on the road-map angiogram. Enhanced tip memory means the wire will retain this angle better, so precision in initial shaping is more rewarded. Use a single clean bend at 5–7 mm from the tip.
During bifurcation navigation, use small rotational increments at the hub rather than large rapid rotations. The 1:1 torque response makes small adjustments effective; large rotations may cause the catheter to herniate around a curve. Once engaged in the target vessel, advance the Headway microcatheter over it using standard technique.
Clinical Applications
Superselective AVM feeder catheterization for multi-pedicle embolization, selective PICA and AICA access for posterior fossa aneurysm treatment, ophthalmic artery catheterization for retinoblastoma chemotherapy or orbital AVM, acute-angle MCA M2 branch selection for distal aneurysm coiling, and vertebral artery branch selection for complex vertebrobasilar procedures.
In stroke thrombectomy, Traxcess Select can be used when initial Traxcess 14 fails to direct into an occluded vessel at a challenging bifurcation angle — for example, a high-riding MCA bifurcation where both M2 branches are at acute angles from the approach direction.
