Amplatzer™ VSD OccludersProduct Code (REF): 9-VSD-MUSC-004
Ventricular septal defects are the most commonly found congenital heart defect. There are four types of VSDs: muscular, perimembranous, conal or subpulmonary, and inlet. Abbott offers Amplatzer Muscular and Membranous VSD Occluders for complete closure of muscular and perimembranous VSDs. The device waist centers and closes the defect, a symmetrical design allows a transcatheter femoral or arterial delivery approach, and the device is constructed from self-expanding Nitinol mesh and polyester material, which promotes tissue in-growth. The Amplatzer™ Muscular VSD Occluder is intended for the closure of congenital ventricular septal defects in high-risk surgical patients; its 7 mm waist length is designed to accommodate the thickness of the muscular ventricular septal wall. The Amplatzer™ P.I. Muscular VSD Occluder is intended for the closure of post-myocardial-infarction (P.I.) VSD, with a 10 mm waist length designed to accommodate the damaged muscular tissue of the septal wall following a myocardial infarction. The Amplatzer™ Membranous VSD Occluder is intended for the closure of hemodynamically significant perimembranous VSDs; its non-concentric design enables placement without interfering with the aortic or atrioventricular valves. All Amplatzer Muscular and Membranous Occluders are self-expandable, double-disc devices whose two discs are linked by a connecting waist corresponding to the size of the VSD, providing optimal occlusion. These percutaneous, transcatheter devices can be recaptured and redeployed for precise placement.

Request DocumentationFrequently Asked Questions
- Which VSD types do Amplatzer™ VSD Occluders address?
- Abbott offers Amplatzer Muscular and Membranous VSD Occluders for complete closure of muscular and perimembranous VSDs. Ventricular septal defects are the most commonly found congenital heart defect, and the four types are muscular, perimembranous, conal or subpulmonary, and inlet.
- What is the difference between the Muscular and P.I. Muscular occluders?
- The Amplatzer™ Muscular VSD Occluder has a 7 mm waist length designed to accommodate the thickness of the muscular ventricular septal wall and is intended for congenital VSDs in high-risk surgical patients. The Amplatzer™ P.I. Muscular VSD Occluder has a 10 mm waist length designed to accommodate the damaged muscular tissue following a myocardial infarction and is intended for post-infarct VSD.
- How does the Membranous VSD Occluder avoid the adjacent valves?
- The Amplatzer™ Membranous VSD Occluder is intended for closure of hemodynamically significant perimembranous VSDs. Its non-concentric design enables placement without interfering with the aortic or atrioventricular valves.
- Can Amplatzer™ VSD Occluders be repositioned during the procedure?
- Yes. These percutaneous, transcatheter, self-expandable double-disc devices can be recaptured and redeployed for precise placement. Their two discs are linked by a connecting waist corresponding to the size of the VSD, and the nitinol mesh and polyester construction promotes tissue in-growth.
